Surplus wire buying in Rexburg, Idaho

A university town on the upper Snake plain, surrounded by potato, grain and dairy ground and the cellars that serve it.

Rexburg is built around a university and the farm economy that surrounds it: potatoes, grain, alfalfa seed and dairy on the plain to the north and west. Student housing, classroom buildings and church buildings are replaced or expanded on a steady cycle, and the same contractors work grain bins and potato cellars out of town. Both kinds of work leave wire behind.

Campus turnover and the control wiring in a potato cellar

University and student-housing projects run on a semester clock. A building being reconfigured will shed feeders, conduit runs and branch-circuit wire in a single week, and much of it is standard THHN pulled out in lengths too short to reuse but long enough to be worth stripping.

Outside town, potato cellars and grain bins run on fans, conveyors and small motors, wired in control and tray cable with a good deal of it exposed to weather and washdown. When a cellar is re-controlled, the old cable comes out in coils, sometimes with the jacket printing still readable and the conductors bright, sometimes tinned green from a roof that leaked for three seasons.

Logistics

US-20 is the main east-west route through Rexburg and reaches I-15 west of Idaho Falls, roughly twenty-five miles away. The drive is flat and open, and wind across the plain is the usual complication for anything tall on a trailer. In-town addresses are a mix of grade-level parking lots and older buildings with alley access, and campus work is scheduled around class hours with a check-in at a facilities desk and an escort on some jobs. Snow stays from December through February and roofs shed ice, so outdoor stock is often wet when it is pulled. Photograph the reel or coil in place, the tag, and any jacket damage before the material is handled.
