Surplus wire buying in Ammon, Idaho

A growing suburb east of Idaho Falls, tied to a technical workforce and the upper Snake potato and grain belt.

Ammon sits just east of Idaho Falls, on ground that grows potatoes, grain and alfalfa but now mostly sells houses. New subdivisions, schools and retail pads account for most of the construction, and a large contractor base works both those edges and the processing and technical employers in the wider county. Surplus here tends to be new material rather than salvage.

Pad-mount services and a contractor base working the whole county

The typical house service is a 200-amp underground lateral from a pad-mounted transformer to a meter main, then SER or copper feeders to the panel. Subdivisions going in all at once mean contractors buy in quantity, and when a phase is redesigned the leftovers are still in factory packaging with legible tags and unbroken cartons.

The commercial side of the county runs larger: three-phase service for a school or a retail building, and instrumentation and control cable for the technical employers west of town. That work leaves short lengths of shielded pair and tray cable that rarely get reused, plus grounding conductor, lugs and exothermic connections left over from a grounding grid.

Logistics

US-20 runs through Ammon and meets I-15 west of Idaho Falls about six miles from the center of town, so a load reaches the interstate quickly. Most construction addresses are grade-level with a dirt or gravel approach and no dock, and deliveries get scheduled around the framers rather than the other way round. Winter is the real constraint: snow cover from December into March, plowed lots with banks pushed up at the edges, and cold that makes PVC conduit brittle enough to be a handling concern. Photograph the labels on cartons and reels, since unused material in original packaging is the easiest to verify and the easiest to move.
