Surplus wire buying in Blackfoot, Idaho

The Bingham County seat, at the center of Idaho's potato storage, seed and processing economy.

Blackfoot is the county seat of Bingham County, which grows and stores a large share of Idaho's potato crop and also produces grain, sugar beets, alfalfa and cattle. Processing plants, seed operations and potato cellars line the roads out of town, and the downtown still has its older commercial core. The waste stream mixes heavy plant cable with lighter material from storefronts and rentals.

Potato cellars, processing lines and pivot power

A potato cellar is an electrical building: fans, humidifiers, conveyors and controls, most of it running on 480 volts with motor leads and starters replaced on a rotation. Cable pulled out of that environment is usually sound copper under a jacket that has gone stiff, and the control and instrumentation runs are long enough to matter once they are out of the trays.

Processing adds washdown to the picture. SOOW cord, sealed fittings and tray cable rated for wet locations are standard, and a line changeover leaves partial reels of each behind. Out on the fields, pivots and wells draw submersible pump cable and USE-2 in direct burial, replaced a span at a time and rarely recorded anywhere.

Logistics

I-15 runs along the west side of Blackfoot with interchanges at the town's edges, and US-26 comes in from the east, so the industrial addresses sit within a few minutes of the interstate. The ground is flat and open. Most plants and cellars have paved or graveled yards with grade-level access, some have docks with levelers, and the larger facilities want a visitor log, a vest and sometimes an escort before a truck is allowed in. Harvest and processing from August into the winter is the busy window, and cellars are often drifted in by January. Photograph the reel face and jacket legend, and note whether the material came out of a washdown room.
