Surplus wire buying in Post Falls, Idaho

A Kootenai County manufacturing and distribution town on the Spokane River, between Coeur d'Alene and Spokane.

Post Falls sits on the Spokane River between Coeur d'Alene and the Washington line, and its economy is manufacturing, distribution and construction rather than the timber that first cleared the ground. Warehouses and light industrial plants line the I-90 corridor, and subdivisions fill the ground between them. That combination produces large service feeders from new buildings and a steady trickle of cable from plant maintenance.

Distribution buildings, plant maintenance and river-corridor construction

A new distribution building is mostly a service: a large transformer, parallel feeders in conduit, and a long run of aluminum or copper to a main switchboard. The leftovers are heavy and short — eight or ten feet of 4/0 that nobody wants to scrap and nobody can use either — plus a partial reel of the same conductor sitting in a corner of the site trailer.

Plant maintenance is the other stream. Conveyors, packaging equipment and machine tools run on SOOW cord, tray cable and motor leads, and a line reconfiguration puts a mixed collection of cable on a single pallet. Because the buildings are newer, most of the wire carries legible printing and dates, which makes sorting and grading straightforward.

Logistics

I-90 runs the length of Post Falls with interchanges at the main commercial exits, and Spokane is about twenty miles west on the same corridor. Industrial addresses mostly have docks with levelers and paved yards sized for trailers, while the older river-front blocks are grade-level and tighter. Snow and ice from November into February are the seasonal constraint, and a sloped or unplowed lot can stop a longer trailer entirely. Photograph the reel and tag, the door the material is coming out of, and the yard conditions, since access decides how a load gets picked up.
