Surplus wire buying in Moscow, Idaho
A Palouse college town in Latah County, ringed by wheat, lentil and pea ground and the research that supports it.
Moscow sits on the Palouse in northern Idaho, with the university at its center and dryland wheat, lentil, pea and canola ground rolling out in every direction. The town has an older brick downtown, a laboratory and research presence, and a manufacturing base in electronics and fabrication. Surplus arrives from three separate streams that rarely overlap.
Laboratory power, seed plants and a hundred-year-old downtown
University and research buildings carry loads ordinary commercial work does not: isolated grounds, shielded instrumentation cable, and dedicated circuits that get reworked whenever equipment changes. That leaves short lengths of specialty cable, grounding conductor and lugs, and conduit runs pulled out whole when a lab is reconfigured over a break.
Seed cleaning and grain handling out on the Palouse run on motors, fans and conveyors, wired in tray cable and control cable with a life measured in seasons. Downtown, the brick buildings on the main street have had three or four service changes, and each one left the previous feeders behind, usually copper and usually undocumented.
Logistics
US-95 is the only through route, running north toward Coeur d'Alene and I-90 about thirty-five miles away, and south over the grade into the Lewiston valley. There is no interstate frontage, so a load is a highway trip in either direction. Downtown addresses have alley access, low doors and no docks; the industrial edges of town are grade-level with gravel yards. Snow and ice from December into February close the southern grade now and then, and spring mud limits access to rural seed and grain sites. Photograph the reel or coil with its tag, the jacket printing, and the alley or door the material sits behind.
