Surplus wire buying in Mountain Home, Idaho
An Elmore County town on the Snake River plain, built around an Air Force base and open rangeland.
Mountain Home is a service town on the Snake River plain, with an Air Force base to the southeast and rangeland, cattle and irrigated hay in every other direction. Construction runs to base housing, schools, retail and the ordinary replacement of an older downtown. The surrounding country is thin, so most electrical material arrives by truck and any surplus sits until someone makes a decision about it.
Base-adjacent construction and rangeland pump work
Work tied to the base is scheduled and inspected, and it produces the usual commercial leftovers: cut lengths of THHN and XHHW, MC cable from interior partitions, and grounding conductor from a new service. Contractors there tend to buy to specification and over-order rather than risk a second delivery to a remote jobsite.
Outside town the material is agricultural and plain. Stock waterers, small irrigation pumps and shop buildings run on UF and USE-2, and a well replacement leaves submersible cable coiled by the hole. Welding cable and SOOW cord from ranch and equipment repair make up most of what is left, usually dirty and usually still usable.
Logistics
I-84 runs through Mountain Home with several interchanges, and US-20 branches northeast toward the base and the Camas Prairie, so nearly any address is a short drive from the interstate. The town is roughly fifty miles southeast of Boise, which makes a small load a long round trip. Lots are open and grade-level with gravel or asphalt aprons, and gates are common on base-adjacent property. Wind and blowing dust are constant in spring and fall, and summer heat is severe enough that a covered load is worth the effort. Photograph the whole reel including the flange, the tag, and the yard, so distance and access are obvious from the photographs alone.
