Surplus wire buying in Kuna, Idaho

A fast-growing exurb south of Boise, still ringed by alfalfa, mint and seed ground being sold off for subdivisions.

Kuna was a farm town on the dry south side of the Boise metro and is now one of the fastest-growing edges of it. Alfalfa, mint, seed crops and dairies still run up to the new subdivision lines, and the same contractors pour foundations and set pump panels. Both kinds of work leave surplus: long feeder lengths from new services, and odd coils from repairs on aging irrigation.

Subdivision services beside working hay and seed ground

Service-entrance work dominates. That means 200 and 320-amp meter mains, aluminum SER, long copper pulls from a pad-mounted transformer to the house, and occasionally a pull of medium-voltage primary to a new pad. Builders who wire the same plan repeatedly still order more than they use, and the leftovers are short and mixed: twenty-five feet of 2/0 here, half a carton of 12/2 there, a partial reel that got rained on.

Out on the remaining farm ground the material is different. Submersible cable for stock and domestic wells, UF and USE-2 for waterers and shop subpanels, and tray or control cable where a pivot or a hay shed got a new panel. Welding cable turns up on the equipment repair side, often with a worn jacket and a taped repair that has been there for years.

Logistics

The Kuna-Meridian road, State Highway 69, is the main north-south route and reaches I-84 at Meridian in about twelve miles. There is no rail and no interstate frontage here. Most addresses are open lots with a gravel drive and room to turn a trailer, and grade-level access is the norm. Construction traffic and school buses make weekday mornings slow, and dust in August and mud in February decide where a truck can go without blocking someone's driveway. Photograph the material against something with scale, the reel or carton label, and the general condition of the jacket, since a good share of this stock has been stored outdoors.
